The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a significant awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a clamor for introducing of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
